Meet Our Client - Debra Landrem, Dynamite Flyer and Desert Flyer

Debra Landrem is one of those women who embodies both grace and grit. Working as a registered nurse to “support her horse habit” keeps her extremely busy. However, Debra still finds the time to compete successfully in an equine sport called Combined Driving Event.

The CDE (Combined Driving Event) is a fast growing equine sport first introduced in the United States in the 1980s. It is modeled after the Three Day Event but involves carriage driving. Prince Phillip was a major force in developing this sport and still competes today.

The CDE has three phases; dressage, cross-country marathon and obstacle cone driving.

  • Dressage takes place in a manicured arena where the team performs a test similar to a mounted dressage test.
  • During the cone competition, a complicated obstacle course must be traversed with out going off course or disturbing the cones.
  • The cross country marathon, a favorite with spectators, is really exciting to watch. The competitors cover several miles through fields and woods at high speed while negotiating challenging hazards. It’s a good thing Debra has grit because when asked “Isn’t it kinda scary?” she replied “No, it’s so fun!”. Whoa.

matched ˝ Arabian ˝ Welch ponies

Debra is particularly proud of her driving pair, Dynamite Flyer and Desert Flyer. These perfectly matched ˝ Arabian ˝ Welch ponies are full brothers born a year apart. Since these ponies compete in what is the equivalent of a triathalon for horses, their stamina, ability and courage are always tested.

Good luck to Debra and her ponies in their upcoming competitions.
